The 18th Japan Newspaper Production Show - JANPS 2005 - officially ended today at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center in Ariake, Tokyo. This year's biennial four-day event, organized by the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association, got underway on 15 November and saw an outstanding turnout of visitors and participating exhibitors.

The Mitsubishi stand at JANPS drew tremendous crowds who came to witness advanced technology in the form of a quality control system for the company's super high-speed DIAMONDSTAR newspaper offset
press. Designed to raise printing quality to new unparalleled levels and ensure consistent print production throughout the run, the new quality control system reads half-tone dots.

The DIAMONDSTAR is Mitsubishi's state-of-the-art newspaper offset press and was the first double width newspaper press in the world to achieve a production-proven printing speed of 90,000 copies per hour.
Since the press was launched two years ago, domestic and overseas publishers have already ordered 20 sets. In April of this year, the DIAMONDSTAR won the JSME (Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers) Award in the Technology Division.

The quality control system introduced at JANPS is known as DIAMOND EYETM. The automated system has been in operation with DIAMONDSTAR presses installed at the Koto and Fuchu plants of Yomiuri Shimbun and has proven to be an effective means for controlling color quality.

The complete DIAMOND EYETM quality control system offers the following five features:

1. Comprehensive patchless color management system
In place of conventional color bars or patches, the entire printed image is scanned as the web exits each tower unit within the press line. This feature realizes a reduction in sheet waste that leads to power savings and also contributes to significant improvement in full-page color advertisements.

2. Smudge and off-white inspection
In addition to providing improved in-line sheet inspection functions, the system also prevents the dispatch of newspapers containing printing irregularities and reduces labor costs associated with off-line inspections.

3. Dampening control device
The supply of dampening solution is automatically increased when scumming is detected, eliminating the need for the press operator to perform this adjustment.

4. Easy plate position verification
This function automatically confirms that all printing plates are properly positioned with respect to proper page layout by comparing plate images and printing images.

5. Comprehensive color management system (CMS) (Optional)
Color density changes resulting from use of different printing materials or supplies are properly compensated for throughout the press line to ensure color quality standardization.

With "Leading a new way to new color printing quality" as the theme of the Mitsubishi stand at JANPS and supported by the breakthrough technology of the DIAMOND EYETM, Mitsubishi performed daily product demonstrations in collaboration with NEC Engineering.

Demonstrations focused on Mitsubishi's new printing environment solution that improves plant efficiency through interfacing of newspaper offset presses and CTP with single-source/multi-use digitalized information. Visitors to the stand and at daily demonstrations expressed a keen interest in this new approach.

Prior to the conclusion of the event, the Japan Newspaper Publishers and Editors Association presented Mitsubishi with the organizer's "Exhibitor Award" for outstanding booth design and unique team-up arrangement with NEC Engineering.
